Leave The Light On- Stories About HOME
Leave The Light On is a storytelling experience, reflecting on our relationships to “Home.”
Recently Whiskey & Boots have presented the work at Midland Junction Arts August-November 2026 and at The LakeHouse Arts Centre and Kumeū Arts Auckland, New Zealand August-October 2026
We ask audience to consider the home they come from and the home they might create in the future. A cross section of people from the community are interviewed, ranging in age, experience and background. Part performance, part installation, HOME seeks to explore people’s relationships and journey to find “home”
THIS WORK IS COMPRISED OF THREE ELEMENTS:
PERFORMANCE – Whiskey & Boots will interview 6 – 8 people from the community about their relationship to “home”:
How did they find their home here?
Why did they choose it as a home?
Where and what has home been for them?
These interviews are recorded and edited then presented as “Headphone Verbatim Performance” (meaning the actor wears headphones and delivers the text as they hear them, live, without embellishment). Whiskey & Boots will work with local musicians to compose and perform live and recorded music in response to the stories of home.
AUDIO INSTALLATION – audio recordings are interwoven with composed music underscoring the recounts of home, highlighting the commonalities and differences. This audio track is played as an audio installation in the gallery with accompanying projected drawing animations by Daniel Grant.
“DEAR HOME”
– as part of the installation, audiences are invited to write an anonymous letter to their own home that is then displayed in the space. The stories and the space will be changed by those who view it and share with it, creating a unique work – celebrating “homes” and all the ways they impact on us.
